Front view: cobwebs, dust, home for several generations of mice families. Yech!

ASSEMBLY TIME

Coming together at last. Dig those wheels eh?! The owner, Reta Prasse made an excellent choice in selecting 1967 Corvette Turbine alloys. Sporty/elegant/classy/period correct: SUUWWEETTTT!

NAKED in the SUN

Completely paintless and outside for some sandblast cleaning of metal corrosion, you know, “here and there”.

The Prasse Families' 1966 Chevrolet Corvair Monza just rolled out from its storage shed into the sunshine. It had last turned a wheel in 1975!

The tail view is looking pretty sweet too.

"Elly" has been owned by the Prasse family since new and was Mrs. Eleanor Prasse's "favorite ride."

A GOOD FOUNDATION

Her first of many baths of primers. Black epoxy primer makes a great foundation for bodywork and subsequent primers. Urethane primer next.

Ahhhh! First applications of the original 1966 Chevrolet colour “Aztec Bronze”. Woot!

The hood, deck lid, and 3 grille panels had to be painted while off the car. Painting the car body and all these panels at the same time made me do some challenging spray booth gymnastics, but I got‘er done. No hits, no runs, no errors!

Showtime

“ELLY”

strutting her stuff at the car show! Many, many admirers comments from newbys who didn’t even know what a Corvair was, and previous and current Corvair owners. Yep.. ok... I admit it... I was feelin’ rather proud!

EYE CANDY

Elly’s newly refurbished interior. Head liner, dash, door trim panels, seats, carpets, trim: all new or repaired and repainted. Black, white, chrome, and Aztec Bronze everywhere else: its 1960’s eye candy compared to modern vehicles with acres of moulded black or grey plastic.

The reupholstered seats look great and are surprisingly comfortable to sit in.

The rear seat accommodation is cosy ~ not bad for short rides. The large windows and elegantly slim roof pillars on this car make it feel spacious inside. I tip my hat to the GM stylists who designed this car back in the day. If any of them are still alive, "NICE JOB GUYZ!" Doing this Corvair restoration has been a real privilege and I would like to express my special appreciation for Ms. Reta Prasse who entrusted us all these months with this priceless family heirloom.

Now let’s drive!

WARMING UP

Fresh in from the cold! We had just finished our 1966 Corvair Monza Convertible restoration so it was pretty cool to have them side by side.

Lots of metal surgery needed to rectify decades of tin worm damage.

Off to the True Colours Autobody Spa for a makeover!

She had to sit in “our cold storage room” until shop space was available.
